Run-An-Engine

At the Grand Scales Convention 2003, you will have the opportunity to run four different locomotives. There is a fee for training materials and brief instruction. Running the engines is free of charge at the hospitality of the Hillcrest & Wahtoke railroad (however, no one will be invited to run unless they have received the appropriate training materials). Guests will be invited to run the appropriate engine once per set instructional materials purchased.*

Glenwood Southpark & Pacific 2-8-0 No. 13
$55 Instruction
This engine has become a favorite of the those who follow the 5" scale community. It is a charming engine built by Ken Kukuk. It is lettered for the GSP&P, thought it has spent it's life so far at the Hillcrest & Wahtoke. It will be a great thrill to run this engine around the entire H&W railroad with a skilled engineer sitting at your side, giving your just enough coaching. After purchasing your instructional materials you will be asigned a time slot of approximately a half an hour to "pull the throttle".
As with all the engines. If you would like to run a second time, additional instruction will be required. This will be supplied at the original rate of $55 or $45 respectively.

 No. 57 Work Train
$55 Instruction
While some might think that running a diesel might not be as interesting as a steamer, they would be mistaken. The steam engines will be running "passenger service" with station stops and mainline running. The Davenport diesel, however, will be used in a ballast work train. It will be loading crushed rock ballast, then running as an "extra" out to end-of-track where the ballast will need to be spread. If you would enjoy the fun challenge of doing some honest switching, using traditional hand signals and a several ton train, then this is the game for you.

Redwood Valley 4-6-0 No. 11 Sequoia
$55 Instruction
This is the largest and some say most handsome of the famous Redwood Valley engines. The Redwood Valley Railway has been operating for a half century now and is one of the most famous and respected 15" gauge railways in the world. It is an unprecedented privilege for the public to be invited to run one of these engine, and the GSQ staff is truly indebted for the opportunity to offer this opportunity. Millions of people have ridden the Redwood Valley. And almost every one of them had dreamed of being able to run one of their beautiful engines. Now is your chance.

 0-4-0 No. 18 Anne
$45 Instruction

The construction of this engine was featured in a very popular series of articles in GSQ. And it is as cute as a bug's ear. But don't let her size fool you. Pound for pound she's got as much pulling power as her larger cousins. Many engineers have described running her as a "real kick in the pants . . . great fun." And you'll be seeing more engines very similar to her in the years to come as she is available as a kit, and there are several currently under construction.

*Note: It is to be understood that in compliance with zoning restrictions, none of your convention registration fees or instructional fees will be exchanged at the Hillcrest & Wahtoke and are not payment to the Hillcrest & Wahtoke for services rendered. Convention attendees are non-paying invited guests to the railroad. And during October 3-5, 2003 only GSQ Convention attendees will be invited to visit the railroad. The Grand Scales Convention 2003 is headquartered in (and cosponsored by) the City of Reedley at the Reedley Opera House.
